How to gain English fluency
by: Robby Kukurs

Hi Rani,

Answer to your question lies in learning English collocations. Collocations are words that naturally go together and form naturally occurring English speech patterns.

"Draw a conclusion", "make a difference", "mind your own business" are typical English collocations and if you try to convey the same message using other words it just doesn't sound right - "do a conclusion" and "have a difference" just doesn't sound right, and you can't ever really put "mind your own business" in other words, can you?

So it's all about learning how words go naturally together in fluent English.

The big question, of course, is HOW to do is best.

First of all, learn all new vocabulary in CONTEXT instead of separate words. Whenever you come across a new word, learn the associated words with it; learn the whole collocation or phrase!

Secondly, you have to recognize that the basic unit of a language is a PHRASE instead of a WORD! It's the phrases, word combinations and collocations that form fluent speech, no native English speaker sticks separate words together!

So whenever you get a chance, learn and repeat natural English phrases from all sorts of English media - printed, online, movies and music etc.

Regards,

Robby
